Recent declassification of CIA documents in the U.S. has shed light on the many ways the government has used psychic (psi) abilities to gain the advantage over other governments, locate hostages, uncover new information in law enforcement investigations, and even to explore space!
What makes these stories so interesting is that this effort in the U.S. alone spanned more than 20 years under various code names, during which 26,000 telepathic forays were conducted by 227 psychics! That is quite an extensive program.
1. Stargate Project
In 1970, learning that the Soviet Union was investing heavily in “psychotronic” (parapsychology) research, the U.S. launched a program called SCANATE (scan by coordinate), which would later go by a number of other names, including the “Stargate Project.” This program explored the use of remote viewing for intelligence purposes and included research done at the Stanford Research Institute in California.
2. Grill Flame
During the Iran Hostage incident (1979-1980), more than 200 attempts were made by psychics to probe the U.S. Embassy and other locations in Iran to determine the whereabouts of the hostages, and to correctly report physical health of hostages, how closely they were guarded, and that the hostages had been moved to a different location. The code name for this program was “Grill Flame.”
3. Exploring “Outer Space”
Another use of psi was to explore “outer space” for scientific insight. For example, Ingo Swann, according to recently released CIA documents, “was able to successfully describe and view a ring around Jupiter before scientists had any idea that it existed.” Swann accomplished this feat in 1973 while working for the Stargate Project. The presence of the rings of Jupiter was confirmed by the space probe Voyager in 1979.

4. Predicting Future Events
In addition to the use of remote viewing, some psychics within Stargate accurately used their precognitive abilities to identify future events. One example is a prediction that an American official would be abducted on a specific date in 1981. At least one skeptical CIA officer became a believer when General James L. Dozier was taken captive in Italy that very night.
5. Project “Sun Streak
In 1990, through Project “Sun Streak,” the CIA used a psychic’s abilities to learn more about the Lockerbie bombing (Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988). Twenty-two pages of notes included a description of the cassette tape recorder that housed the bomb obtained through the use of “psychoenergetics,” another word to describe psychokinesis.
While it is widely believed that this program, at least within the CIA, ended in 1995, one can’t help but wonder if this work continues to this day. Recently, an eerie tweet from Eric Snowden, former US intelligence contractor, hinted at the use of telepathy much more broadly than the released CIA documents suggest. Snowden retweeted a tweet that said, “Remember that people don’t have access to your secret thoughts and feelings,” by adding, “Well, most people.”
So what do you think? Given the long history of using psychic abilities in the intelligence and law enforcement fields, does this work continue today? Please share your thoughts in the comment area below!
